Sexism In Christianity

An Audiovisual collaboration between composer Roziht Edwards and visual artist Jenna Flohr

Program Notes:

This piece describes the stages of mindsets Roziht had discovered and felt as a Taiwanese-American growing up in a conservative Christian background. The hymn-like beginning of the piece describes an image of a young and obedient Roziht who was covenanted to be God’s helper. The bended pitches and low boom sound effects represent Roziht’s discovery of the ugliness in male-dominated religious groups when she was a teenager. After surviving domestic violence, the ongoing divorce is slowly transforming into a lifelong battle between letting go of faith and letting go of hatred. The repeated lyrics “let me go” include the urge of escaping a covenant marriage, starting to reject the entire Christian background that she was raised in, and forgetting those moments when violent incidents occurred.
